Sandathenna is situated at the edge of Nuwara Eliya plains towards the upper part of the Bomburuella Seethaeliya reserve. It is 6438 feet above the mean sea level and offers a 360 degree view of the surrounding terrain.
The whole area or the Moon Plains is also the catchment area at the Uma Oya Resevoir. The Moon Plains summit offers a magnificent view of Piduruthalagala the highest mountain of Sri Lanka, Single Tree, Kikiliyamana, Great Western, Konikal Hill, Kirigalpottha, Thotupola, Hakgala,and Namunukula mountains.
This farm here had earlier been established at Rahangala farm yard and then at Horton Plains and later was shifted and re-established at Sandathenna in the year of 1958.
